Kentucky Fire Commission provides Thanksgiving safety tips

Lexington, Ky. – As families and friends prepare to gather for Thanksgiving, the Kentucky Fire Commission encourages everyone to take several precautions to ensure a safe and happy holiday.   

“This time of year there is always a spike in preventable home fires as it becomes easy to get distracted when gathering for holiday celebrations,” said Ronnie Day, executive director of the Kentucky Fire Commission. “Thanksgiving serves as a great reminder for everyone to practice general fire safety tips that should be kept in mind every day of the year.”

Did you know? According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA):

·         Thanksgiving is the leading day of the year for home fires involving cooking equipment – there are more than three times as many cooking fires on Thanksgiving Day as there are on any other typical day of the year.

·         Cooking fires are the leading cause of home fires and home fire injuries.

·         Two-thirds (66 percent) of home cooking fires start with the ignition of food or other cooking materials.

Keep these safety tips in mind not only during the Thanksgiving holiday, but year-round as well:

·         Make sure all heating systems and elements are operating safely; test all smoke alarms; and keep a fire extinguisher on-hand in case of an emergency, and know how to use it.

·         If you prefer fried turkey, consider using a professional establishment to prepare the dish or consider using an oil-less fryer; the use of outdoor gas-fueled fryers requiring oil can increase chances of serious burns or injuries, or destruction of property.

·         Use the three-foot rule – keep children and pets at least three feet away from hot surfaces and keep all floors clear to avoid trips and falls, especially in the kitchen.

·         Keep lighters and matches out of the reach of children, as well as any dangling electric cords.

·         Stay in the kitchen when cooking on the stovetop, and do not wear loose fitting clothes near cooking equipment.

·         Keep the stove area clutter-free, and never put glass dishes or lids on the stove or over a burner.

·         When removing lids from hot pans, tilt them away from you; steam or splashes from hot food and liquids can cause burns.

Since 1972, the mission of the Kentucky Fire Commission and the State Fire Rescue Training agencies has been to train and certify volunteer and career firefighters of Kentucky. In 1997, the Postsecondary Education Improvement Act was mandated, bringing about the approval of an associate in applied science (AAS) degree in fire/rescue science technology. At that time, the Kentucky Fire Commission was established within the Kentucky Community and Technical College System.
