New IFSAC testing changes efffective July 1

Mar 22, 2019

The National Fire Protection Administration (NFPA) has updated the Standard for Professional Qualifications NFPA 1001.  This standard gives the minimum qualifications for FF 1 and FF 2.  With this standard being released, the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) requires the Kentucky Fire Commission (KyFC) to update its test banks and skill sheets.

Before changes take place, the remaining test dates for practical skills testing to the current standard are:

March 30-31, Area 5 – Elizabethtown

April 6-7, Area 3 – Owensboro

April 27-28, Area 13 – Corbin

What does this mean?

Beginning July 1, the KyFC Accredited Certification office will test to the NFPA 1001, 2019 edition, requiring all candidates to pass both the written and practical skills for this new edition.

  • Certification cannot be granted to two editions of the standard.  This means that firefighters cannot pass skills to the 2013 edition and the written test to the 2019 edition, or vice versa.

Due to this change, you must make sure that all NFPA 1001, 2013 edition FF 1 and 2 skills and written tests are completed by June 30, 2019.

Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations will also be updated during this time period.

  • The Accredited Certification office will begin the process of switching from NFPA 472, 2013 edition to the 2017 edition of NFPA 1072.
  • The same timeline as stated for NFPA 1001 will be followed.

In summary: Beginning July 1, 2019, the KyFC Accredited Certification office will test firefighters on the NFPA 1001 Firefighter 1 and 2 to the 2019 edition and the NFPA 1072 Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations to the 2017 edition.

  • Firefighters must complete the written and practical skills evaluation to the same edition of the standard.
  • This will not affect certifications that have already been issued
