Instructor II Challenge Process

This program is for those that possess KY Fire Instructor II certification (which was issued circa 2009 or earlier) and want to obtain IFSAC Accredited Fire Instructor II.

July 23-24, 2022, District 5 Training Center, 630 College Street Road, Elizabethtown or 

August 6-7, 2022, District 9 Training Center, 99 Lake Park Drive, Morehead

To participate:

1) Candidates must possess IFSAC Accredited Fire Instructor I prior to participating in this process.  To inquire about obtaining that credential, contact: ifsacaccreditedcertification@kctcs.edu

2) Candidates will need to study Chapters 11-15 of the IFSTA Fire and Emergency Services Instructor 9th Edition text and be prepared to take the written exam during the first two hours of the first day of the scheduled challenge course.

3) Cost of the written exam is $25 and candidates must bring a check or money order made out to KCTCS KY Fire Commission the first morning of class.

4) Students must bring the following materials to all class meetings:

1) IFSTA Fire and Emergency Services Instructor 9th Edition textbook (ISBN 978-087939696-1);

2) Computer with Microsoft Office; Media Player;

3) Writing Pad/Utensils, Copies of Departmental SOP/SOG for customizing lesson plans;

4) Any other reference materials, equipment manuals, NFPA standards, etc.

5) Instructor II challenge process courses will be 16 clock hours. All relevant skill sheets will be covered during the course, as well as applicable portions of the textbook related to lesson plan development.  The remaining class time will be dedicated to lesson plan development on a unique topic (which must be approved in consultation with the instructors) and practice related to the random draw skills. Students are expected to have a final version of their lesson plan approved by the course instructors by the end of the class. Those requiring more time than allotted in the course will be handled on a case-by-case basis by the course instructors.

7) Evaluation of the lesson plan and random draw skill will be evaluated by the accredited certification office at a later date/time.
