Thermal Vision and Technical Innovation Grants

The Thermal Vision and Technical Innovation Grant Program is designed to:

  • Reduce and prevent the loss of life by creating better equipped firefighters throughout the Commonwealth; and
  • Upgrade the capabilities of local firefighters by providing financial assistance to be used to purchase thermal vision and other technical devices

Approved Technical Devices for this grant program include thermal imaging cameras (TIC), automated external defibrillator's (AED) and gas monitors.

Fire departments awarded a grant through this program shall receive a grant equal to fifty percent (50%), but not to exceed the sum of five thousand dollars ($5,000) of the agreed price for the purchase of a technical device. One (1) device per application period will be reimbursed; departments will not be reimbursed for any additional devices purchased in any award year.

Grant awardees are required to present proof of purchase, cancelled check or credit card statement reflecting payment, and complete all required reimbursement paperwork by the deadline.

Fire departments formed under KRS Chapter 65, 75, 95 and 273 shall be eligible to receive grants through the Thermal Vision and Technical Innovation Grant Program. Fire departments receiving grants through this program shall comply with all administrative regulations and reporting requirements established by the Fire Commission. Failure to comply with these reporting requirements shall disqualify a fire department from participation in the Thermal Vision and Technical Innovation Grant Program for a period of five (5) years.

Fire departments may apply for the grant during the annual application period. Grants are awarded based upon the date stamp return of the application, eligibility as per KRS 95A.440 and 739 KAR 2:130, and selection by the Fire Commission Grants Committee. Fire departments must also be in compliance with the Fire Commission's State Aid program, if the department receives State Aid.

**NOTE: KRS 95A.440 requires a two-year non-eligibility period. Departments awarded this grant in the previous two fiscal years are NOT eligible to apply during the current year. **
